Why the name Our Year Outdoors? |
Seventy percent of Australian children spend less than an hour outside each day.
Yet experts recommend children spend two to three hours playing outside. But is that even possible? And how can busy families make time for more outdoor play? These were the questions I asked myself in 2016. I'm a teacher and a Mum and back then I knew my kids weren't getting outside enough. So we set a goal to take our kids outside for three hours every day for a year. On the first day, we went to the beach. Then the playground. In the year that followed, we wandered through fields, climbed trees and played in the rain.We built teepees and cubbies, planted trees, camped on a mountain, told stories by firelight, and counted the stars. We found a way of life that was simple and bright, a life that offered us everything, we hadn't realised we'd been missing. |
